Thatch is a layer of dead grass stems and roots that accumulates between the soil surface and green growth. A thin layer is normal, but excessive thatch prevents water, air, and nutrients from reaching roots.
When Thatch Becomes a Problem
Thatch thicker than ½ inch can:
- Reduce fertilizer effectiveness
- Increase pest and disease risk
- Prevent proper water absorption
What Dethatching Does
Dethatching physically removes excess organic material using a rake or power dethatcher. This improves airflow, root development, and overall turf health.
Best Time to Dethatch
- Cool-season grasses: Early spring or fall
- Warm-season grasses: Late spring or early summer
Avoid dethatching during heat stress or drought.
